The Surface Transportation Weather group of RAL works in applied research and decision support for the surface transportation weather community. Among the different products developed in this laboratory, the Maintenance Decision–Support System (MDSS) allows forecasting of snow and ice buildup on roadways as well as treatment recommendations for road maintenance managers, based on different inputs, including regional weather forecasts. This system has been successfully applied in several regions in the United States.

ALVAC is interested in implementing MDSS + WRF as a pilot study on the A-1 highway in order to explore the potential applications of this product in Europe.

Contribution of the Santander Meteorology Group:

Adapting its GFS+WRF-based regional weather forecast system (currently covering Northern Spain) to operationally feed (every 6 hours) the MDSS in the pilot region at an appropriate spatial resolution (3km) for a six month period.

The following panel shows the meteogram for 3-hourly temperature and precipitation (a '*' above the curve indicates the occurrence of snow). Currently two different physical schemes are run, named WRF_UC_Phys1 and WRF_UC_Phys2; therefore, the uncertainty (ensemble spread) is also show in the meteogram (shades) to illustrate the uncertainty. This figure shows the last prediction run at 12UTC (in this case a 4-day horizon prediction is run, where the 00, 06 and 18UTC runs have only a 2-days horizon). For illustrative purposes, only the meteogram corresponding to Somosierra (1450m) is shown.

Moreover, the widget below allows drawing in a map the available predictions, hour by hour. "Prediction for" allows selecting the forecast day and hour desired and "done the" allows selecting the date where the forecast was prepared (note that since the predictions cover a 48 hours interval, two different predictions with two different lead times are available).
